Postscript: 21st September, 2008
--------------------------------

Just a couple of weeks after the publication of this article, I got the nagging suspicion that my 4C's reminded me of something similar that I had read some years ago. After a little thinking, I took a copy of Margaret Thatcher's "Statecraft" off my shelf.

There, in the chapter on "Capitalism and its Critics," I came across her discussion of the five conditions necessary for a free-enterprise economy to thrive: Private Property; Rule of Law, an Enterprise-friendly Culture, a Diversity of Independent and Competing Countries, and a Framework of Taxation and Regulation.

Although not exactly the same, it doesn't take much thinking to see parallels. For "competing countries" read "competing businesses" and for "taxation and regulation" read "premiums, transaction fees, and tier fees."

Essentially, the Second Life(TM) environment needs to operate like a free-enterprise culture to succeed. As do any virtual worlds. Of course, for many people, they see virtual worlds as "just a game," but even they get hooked into buying "things," giving tips, buying Linden(R) dollars, and so on.

It's also interesting that I was drawn back to a book entitled "Strategies for a Changing World." I guess that could have been a sub-title for this very article!
